How to apply stop words to the search bar

Introduction

Stop words are insignificant words that appear in every product name and category and do not provide helpful clues in a search. It is a good idea to remove stop words from search queries, otherwise, they can cause false positives in the search results. 

For example, if your product database is comprised of all products related to scented candles, you can think about adding “scented” and “candle” as stop words as it would return every product on your site when searching.

Add stop words

To add stop words manually from the app’s dashboard:

  1. From the app’s admin, go to Search > Standard Search > Stop words.
  2. Enter your stop words one by one. After each stop word is filled in, click +Add to add the word to your Stop Words dictionary. 
  3. Click Save stop words to let the engine remove them from search queries.

Delete stop words

You can consider that some of your stop words are important signifiers and want them to be included in search queries again, then you can delete them from your Stop Words dictionary. 

To delete stop words from your Stop Words dictionary:

  1. From the app’s admin, go to Search > Standard Search > Stop words.
  2. Detect the stop word that you want to be included again in search queries and click the X icon next to it. You can utilize the Search stop words box for faster search.
  3. Click Save stop words to completely remove them from your stop words dictionary.

Import and export stop words

Our app allows you to export a large number of stop words at one time. This feature can help you to create a backup of your stop words, exchange them between different Shopify stores that have Product Filter & Searched installed, and edit them in bulk.

To export stop words from your Shopify store:

1. From the app’s admin, go to Search > Standard Search > Stop words.
2. Click Export under the Stop words heading.
3. Click Export in the Export stop words to CSV file pop-up to receive the CSV file of your existing stop words.
4. Double-check the file that was downloaded by your browser.
After exporting your stop words and making changes to the CSV file, you can import the updated CSV file into the app's admin. To import stop words using a CSV file:

To import stop words from your Shopify store:

1. From the app’s admin, go to Search > Standard Search > Stop words.

2. Prepare your CSV file with stop words that you want to import into the app. You can download the sample to understand all fields that your CSV file can contain. You can use Notepad, TextEdit, or any similar text editing app to check if the format is correct.
3. Click Import under the Stop words heading.
4. Click the Choose file button and select the CSV file that you want to import.
5. Click Upload. You will receive a message about new stop words that the CSV file contains. Check this notification to make sure all stop words that you want to import are recognized. Then click Import.
6. After successfully importing, you can continue to import other stop words by clicking Import more stop words and repeating the above steps.
7. Select View all stop words to make sure all the suggestion terms have been added to the app’s admin successfully.
